Milestone 2 Windows 8 Build 7927

Earlier today, a Milestone 2 version of Windows 8 leaked and is circulating on torrent sites. The build is an early sample if Microsoft’s work with the Milestone 2 stage of Windows 8.

It was compiled in February, so it’s pretty old and does not contain any new improvements or features. Microsoft is well into the 80.xx build numbers and revealed today that it is at the 8059 stage of Windows 8, which was unveiled during a video demonstration (“Building Windows 8”) of the new ribbon user interface in Windows 8's Explorer.

Windows 8 Milestone 3 disc goes on sale on eBay

It’s been reported that a leaked CD containing Windows 8 Milestone 3 has been up for sale on eBay.  The sale was first reported on WinRumors who said the disc was on sale for $1,500.

There’s no way to know if this “real Windows 8 Milestone 3 Leaked CD” was genuine or not, though it certainly isn’t on eBay any more.  If this was a genuine copy, the fact that it said it was on “CD” could have been a typo, it would raise important questions about there the copy had come from.

It’s not surprising that unscrupulous people would try and cash in on the hype that Windows 8 is generating, and this is either an example of a genuine build being put up for sale, or a scam for an earlier leaked build or perhaps even nothing at all.

Microsoft have had problems with leaked builds of Windows 8 however and there’s no way to know where they are coming from.  The best assumption was the builds were being leaked by hardware partners who were using them to test new drivers.  My contacts within Microsoft though have told me that it’s very unlikely that hardware partners would have had this type of access to Windows 8, if at all, at this stage.

This then indicates that the leaks could have been coming from within Microsoft itself, and there aren’t too many people within the company with access to it.

We’ll never know whether this build was genuine or a hoax, and at $1,500 it would have been foolish for anyone to try and find out.  Either way we’re just over two months now until the official unveiling of the OS at Microsoft’s BUILD conference on September 13th.  The full beta programme will probably begin in January 2012.

Windows 8 Hits Build 8042, Still At Milestone 3

We still rely mostly on rumors and hearsay when it comes to the development progress of the next version of Windows. Microsoft is keeping tight lipped, and will for some time. We estimate that the company will change their stance on this during the Build conference in September.

Latest news come from a post over at Winbeta which report that Microsoft has compiled build 8042 on July 7, with the string 8042.0.110707-1940. Build 8042 is a milestone 3 build which indicates that it is unlikely that Microsoft will release a public build of the operating system today at the Worldwide Partner Conference.

Our best educated guess at this point in time is that we will see a beta release during the Build conference in September, and maybe the release candidate or a second beta during next year’s CES in January. It was already confirmed that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will deliver the post-event keynote.

We know little about new features that Microsoft has added or improved since the last leaked version of the operating system. Ron over at Winbeta suggests that Microsoft has started integration of Windows Live into the Windows 8 builds, and that Microsoft is currently working on fixing bugs and adding code to the builds to update features that are already available but not finalized.

Microsoft has two months left to create the public Windows 8 beta release, ample time to resolve known issues and add the missing features to the operating system.

Another theory that we have heard is that Microsoft will offer a pre-beta in September, and the final beta in January 2012.

What’s your take on the development? Let us know in the comments.
