Windows 8 Beta to Launch In Early 2012

According to sources close to Microsoft, the first beta edition of Windows 8 is to be expected to be released in February of 2012. The Next Web claims to have received information to that effect. Microsoft released the developer preview edition of Windows 8 this September so it would make sense to see the first beta of Windows 8 around February next year.

Alternatively, Winrumors claims that the first stable beta build of Windows 8  will be released in late January, a few weeks earlier, according to their anonymous sources. This would coincide with the Consumer Electronics Show which runs from January 10 to 13.

So I guess we can be pretty certain that we will get to see a stable beta build of Windows 8 in the first two months of 2012. And if the speed at which Windows 7 was developed is to go by, then I’d see we could expect to see the full RTM version around September, which would leave Microsoft with enough time to get to the market for the Christmas period.

Windows 8

Microsoft stressed that the Windows 8 developer preview edition had a lot of features excluded and plenty more that were not finished. They’ve used it more so to judge the feedback from people about the new Metro UI. There’s been several concerns over how user friendly this interface is for people who don’t have touchscreens and there’s also some difficulty with navigating around. Microsoft will hopefully take all this into mind when developing the beta and RTM versions of Windows 8.

So far we don’t know a whole lot about the beta, but it seems that Microsoft will allow users to change the Start Screen colour and background image. Users will also have the ability to create, name and arrange Start Screen groups as well as navigate through the apps in a better fashion. We can also expect to see the Windows Media Center making a return in the beta, alongside Windows Games, DVD Creator etc…

Samsung Gearing Up To Launch Windows 8 Tablets in 2012

It’s not as if we don’t expect it, but according to Bloomberg, Samsungs head of sales and marketing has given the go ahead with working on a tablet running Windows 8, which will be due to be launched in the second half of 2012. This conveniently coincides with the predicted release date of Windows 8.

It’s expected that the product will be a modified version of the Series 7 tablet that Samsung currently sell which runs Windows 7. This tablet packs quite a punch at the moment as it is. It runs on an Intel Core i3 or i5 processor, 64GB SSD, and 4GB of RAM. It’s even got an array of ports such as USB, micro HDMI and mico SD. Chances are Samsung might even beef up that spec a little more by the time Windows 8 hits the market and the tablet’s ready to ship.

Nam Seong Woo who is head of the PC business department at Samsung said that current Samsung Series 7 owners will be able to get an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8, but hasn’t said when, probably because not even Samsung know when Windows 8 will be released. He also said that this tablet is targeted more towards the business market since it’s so handy for carrying around spreadsheets and other documents, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t appeal to consumers just as much.

Samsung now joins other companies like HP and Dell who have all promised to bring out Windows 8 tablets towards the end of next year.

A roadmap slide from an Italian Windows Server presentation spotted by UXEvangelist shows that the next major Windows Server release for Microsoft is set for 2012, which is approximately three years from the release of Windows 7.

windows8roadmapAlthough the roadmap is titled Windows Server release, it is still appropriate for our guessing purposes :)
Windows Server 2008 was a major release and took place in 2008, which is four years before 2012. The next major release for a client operating system will occur one year after. In which case, Microsoft is expecting to release Windows 8 some time in 2013.

Note the ~ (tilda) which means approximate. As we have seen with the development of Windows 7, Microsoft did not mention anything specific regarding release dates until RTM was very near. Original estimates of Windows 7 RTMing in April and October were also off from the July 22 date.

The current poll we have running on the sidebar shows most of our visitors think Q4 2011 will be the Windows 8 release date. What do you think now? Let us know in the comments.

Note: Although Code Name “Windows 8? may suggest that Windows 8 will not be the final name, “Windows 7? was also a Code Name before it was declared the official name of the operating system.
